CollectA Rebbachisaurus Dinosaur - African Sauropod Morocco Niger #88240
The African Sauropod from the Sahara!
The CollectA Rebbachisaurus #88240 brings one of Africa's most distinctive sauropods to life with exceptional detail. This unique long-necked herbivore belonged to the diplodocoid family and roamed the river valleys of North Africa during the Late Cretaceous Period. With fossils discovered across Morocco, Niger, Algeria, and Tunisia, Rebbachisaurus was one of the most widespread dinosaurs in Cretaceous Africa.
Named After the Rebbach Region
Rebbachisaurus garasbae lived approximately 99-97 million years ago during the Late Cretaceous Period in what is now North Africa. Growing up to 68 feet long, Rebbachisaurus was a large sauropod with a relatively lightweight build compared to massive titanosaurs. The name honors the Rebbach region of Morocco where the first fossils were discovered in the 1950s.

Widespread Across North Africa
Rebbachisaurus fossils have been found in Morocco, Niger, Algeria, and Tunisia, making it one of the most geographically widespread dinosaurs in Africa. However, only the Moroccan remains can be confidently attributed to the genus without doubt. This wide distribution suggests Rebbachisaurus was a successful herbivore that thrived across the river systems and coastal plains of Cretaceous North Africa.
A Diplodocoid in Africa
Rebbachisaurus belonged to the Diplodocoidea superfamily, making it related to famous sauropods like Diplodocus and Apatosaurus from North America. However, while diplodocoids dominated the Jurassic Period in North America, they were rare in the Cretaceous. Rebbachisaurus represents one of the last surviving diplodocoid lineages, showing that this ancient group persisted longer in Africa than on other continents.
Life in Cretaceous Africa
During the Late Cretaceous, North Africa was a very different place than the Sahara Desert we know today. The region featured lush river valleys, coastal plains, and abundant vegetation. Rebbachisaurus shared this environment with other fascinating dinosaurs including Spinosaurus, Carcharodontosaurus, and the massive crocodilian Sarcosuchus. As a large herbivore, Rebbachisaurus would have browsed on the abundant plant life using its long neck to reach vegetation.
Discovered in the 1950s
The first Rebbachisaurus fossils were discovered in the 1950s in Morocco's Rebbach region, though the dinosaur wasn't formally described until 1954. Since then, additional fossils have been found across North Africa, gradually revealing more about this distinctive sauropod. The discoveries have made Rebbachisaurus an important piece of the puzzle in understanding African dinosaur evolution.
