About Giraffe Calves:

Baby giraffes are called calves and have one of the most dramatic births in the animal kingdom—they drop about 6 feet to the ground when born! This fall breaks the umbilical cord and helps the calf take its first breath. Giraffe calves are born after a 15-month pregnancy, weighing about 150 pounds and standing 6 feet tall at birth—already taller than most adult humans! Within an hour of birth, calves can stand and walk, and within a few hours they can run. Baby giraffes are born with their distinctive reticulated pattern already visible, and each calf's pattern is unique like a fingerprint. Calves nurse for 9-12 months but start nibbling on leaves within weeks. Mother giraffes are very protective and will kick predators with their powerful legs to defend their babies.
