About Sloths:
Sloths are tree-dwelling mammals found in the rainforests of Central and South America, famous for being the world's slowest mammals! Three-toed sloths move so slowly that algae grows on their fur, giving them a greenish tinge that provides camouflage. They spend most of their lives hanging upside-down from tree branches, moving only about 40 yards per day! Sloths sleep 15-20 hours a day and are so slow that predators often don't notice them. Despite their slowness on land, sloths are surprisingly good swimmers! They have long, curved claws (3 on each limb for three-toed sloths) that hook onto branches, allowing them to hang effortlessly. Sloths have the lowest metabolic rate of any mammal and take up to a month to digest a single meal! They only come down from trees about once a week to defecate. Sloths have extra neck vertebrae allowing them to turn their heads 270 degrees. Baby sloths cling to their mother's belly for months. These gentle creatures are symbols of the rainforest and remind us to slow down and enjoy life!
