About Timber Wolves:

The Timber Wolf (also called Grey Wolf) is the largest member of the canine family and one of North America's most iconic wild animals. Timber wolves typically weigh 70-110 pounds and stand 26-32 inches tall at the shoulder, though some can exceed 140 pounds! They're characterized by their grey and white coat (though colors can vary from white to black), powerful build, large paws (up to 5 inches wide), and distinctive howl. Wolves howl to communicate with their pack, mark territory, coordinate hunts, and strengthen social bonds—their howls can be heard up to 10 miles away in open terrain! Each wolf has a unique howl, allowing pack members to identify each other. Timber wolves are highly social animals that live in packs with complex hierarchies, typically consisting of a breeding pair (alpha male and female) and their offspring. Pack sizes range from 5-10 wolves. They're apex predators that hunt large prey including deer, elk, moose, and bison, using teamwork and strategy. Wolves can run up to 40 mph in short bursts and travel 30+ miles per day. They play a crucial role in maintaining healthy ecosystems by controlling prey populations and creating a "landscape of fear" that prevents overgrazing. Once nearly extinct in the lower 48 states, conservation efforts have helped timber wolf populations recover in some areas. They're symbols of wilderness and the wild spirit of nature!
