The Largest Flying Animal of All Time!

The CollectA Quetzalcoatlus #88655 brings the most massive flying creature ever discovered to life with exceptional detail. This colossal pterosaur featured an incredible 33-40 foot wingspan—as wide as a small airplane!—yet weighed only around 200 pounds thanks to hollow bones. CollectA's expertly sculpted replica captures this magnificent aerial giant in a dramatic hunting scene, seizing a baby Alamosaurus in its toothless beak, showcasing the predatory power of this giraffe-tall flying reptile.

Named After an Aztec God

Quetzalcoatlus northropi lived approximately 68-66 million years ago during the very end of the Late Cretaceous Period in what is now Texas. Named after the Aztec feathered serpent god Quetzalcoatl, this enormous pterosaur was a member of the Azhdarchidae family—advanced toothless pterosaurs with unusually long, stiffened necks. Standing as tall as a giraffe when on the ground, Quetzalcoatlus was one of the last and largest pterosaurs before the mass extinction.

As Tall as a Giraffe, Light as a Human

Despite its enormous size, Quetzalcoatlus weighed only about 200 pounds—roughly the same as an adult human! This incredible lightness was achieved through hollow bones and air sacs throughout its body, similar to modern birds. When standing on the ground, Quetzalcoatlus was as tall as a giraffe, using its long neck to hunt for prey. The combination of massive size and light weight made it the ultimate flying predator.

How Did It Fly?

Scientists continue to study how such a massive creature could achieve flight. The 33-40 foot wingspan provided enormous lift, while the hollow bones kept weight to a minimum. Quetzalcoatlus likely used thermal updrafts to soar effortlessly over Late Cretaceous landscapes, covering vast distances with minimal energy expenditure. Once airborne, it could glide for hours, scanning the ground below for prey.

Apex Aerial Predator

Quetzalcoatlus was a formidable predator both in the air and on the ground. The long, toothless beak was perfect for snatching up small dinosaurs, early mammals, and other prey. This figurine dramatically depicts Quetzalcoatlus seizing a baby Alamosaurus, showing how these giant pterosaurs could tackle surprisingly large prey. The long, stiffened neck provided the reach and stability needed for precision strikes.

The Last of the Giant Pterosaurs

Quetzalcoatlus lived during the final million years of the Cretaceous Period, making it one of the last pterosaurs before the mass extinction event 66 million years ago. It shared the skies with birds and the land with dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus rex and Triceratops. As the largest flying animal ever discovered, Quetzalcoatlus represents the pinnacle of pterosaur evolution.
