The CollectA Torosaurus #88512 brings one of the most impressive horned dinosaurs to life with exceptional detail. This massive ceratopsian featured the largest skull of any known land animal—up to 9.1 feet long!—with a dramatic bony frill pierced by large openings and three prominent horns. CollectA's expertly sculpted replica captures every detail of this magnificent herbivore, from the perforated frill to the jutting horns that made Torosaurus a formidable sight.

The Perforated Lizard

Torosaurus latus, meaning "perforated lizard," lived approximately 68-66 million years ago during the very end of the Late Cretaceous Period in what is now North America. The name refers to the two large openings (fenestrae) in its massive bony frill. Growing up to 30 feet long and weighing several tons, Torosaurus was one of the largest ceratopsians and lived alongside Triceratops during the final days of the dinosaurs.

The Triceratops Debate

One of the most fascinating debates in paleontology surrounds Torosaurus. Some scientists theorize that Torosaurus may actually be a fully mature Triceratops, with the larger, more perforated frill representing an adult stage. According to this hypothesis, as Triceratops aged, its frill would continue growing and developing the characteristic openings seen in Torosaurus. However, other paleontologists argue they are separate species. The debate continues as new evidence is discovered!

A Skull Like No Other

Torosaurus possessed the largest skull of any known land animal, measuring up to 9.1 feet from the tip of the beak to the back of the frill. The massive bony frill featured two large openings that reduced weight while maintaining strength. The three horns—two long brow horns and a shorter nose horn—were likely used for defense against predators like Tyrannosaurus rex, combat with rivals, and display during mating season.

Plant-Eater of the Late Cretaceous

Despite its fearsome appearance, Torosaurus was a peaceful herbivore that used its parrot-like beak to crop tough Cretaceous vegetation. The batteries of teeth in its jaws could grind fibrous plants, while the massive jaw muscles powered by the frill provided tremendous chewing force. Torosaurus likely browsed on low-growing plants, ferns, and cycads in the forests and plains of Late Cretaceous North America.

Discovered in North America

Torosaurus fossils have been found in Montana, Wyoming, South Dakota, Utah, and Saskatchewan, showing it was widespread across western North America during the final million years of the Cretaceous Period. These discoveries place Torosaurus among the last dinosaurs to exist before the mass extinction event 66 million years ago.
