About American Bison:

The American Bison (often called buffalo) is the largest land animal in North America and an iconic symbol of the American West! Male bison can weigh up to 2,000 pounds and stand 6 feet tall at the shoulder. They're characterized by their massive head, short curved horns, humped shoulders, and shaggy dark brown coat that's especially thick on the head, shoulders, and front legs. Despite their size, bison are surprisingly agile—they can run up to 35 mph, jump 6 feet high, and are excellent swimmers! Bison are herbivores that graze on grasses and sedges. They live in herds and have a complex social structure. Bison once numbered in the tens of millions, roaming the Great Plains in massive herds that stretched for miles. By the late 1800s, they were hunted nearly to extinction with fewer than 1,000 remaining. Thanks to conservation efforts, bison populations have recovered to about 500,000 today, though most are on ranches. Wild bison herds exist in Yellowstone and other protected areas.
