The Earth Lizard - Pack Hunter of Giants!

The CollectA Mapusaurus #88889 brings one of South America's most formidable predators to life with exceptional detail. This massive theropod is captured in a dynamic hunting pose, showcasing the power and ferocity that made Mapusaurus one of the largest carnivores ever discovered. Growing up to 42 feet long, this apex predator may have hunted in coordinated packs to bring down the colossal Argentinosaurus—the largest land animal ever to walk the Earth.

The Earth Lizard from Argentina

Mapusaurus roseae, meaning "Earth lizard," lived approximately 97-93 million years ago during the Late Cretaceous Period in what is now Argentina and Chile. Measuring between 33-42 feet in length and weighing up to 3 tons, Mapusaurus was one of the largest carnivorous dinosaurs, rivaling even Tyrannosaurus rex in size. The discovery of multiple Mapusaurus individuals together suggests these massive predators may have lived and hunted in family groups or packs.

Pack Hunters of Giants

One of the most fascinating aspects of Mapusaurus is the evidence suggesting pack hunting behavior. Multiple Mapusaurus fossils were discovered together in a bone bed in Argentina, indicating these massive predators may have lived in family groups. This cooperative behavior would have allowed them to tackle prey far larger than themselves—including the enormous Argentinosaurus, which could weigh up to 100 tons!

Hunting the Largest Land Animal

Mapusaurus shared its environment with Argentinosaurus, one of the largest dinosaurs ever discovered. While a single Mapusaurus would struggle to bring down such massive prey, a coordinated pack attack could overwhelm even these giants. Like modern wolves hunting bison, Mapusaurus packs may have worked together to isolate, exhaust, and bring down young or weakened Argentinosaurus, using their sharp teeth and powerful jaws to inflict devastating wounds.

Rival to T. Rex

At up to 42 feet long, Mapusaurus was comparable in size to Tyrannosaurus rex and belonged to the carcharodontosaurid family—a group of massive predators that dominated the Southern Hemisphere during the Cretaceous. While T. rex had the most powerful bite, Mapusaurus had longer, blade-like teeth perfect for slicing through flesh. The name honors both the Mapuche people of the region and rose collector Rose Letwin.

South American Giant

During the Late Cretaceous, South America was home to some of the largest dinosaurs ever discovered. Mapusaurus was the apex predator in this land of giants, hunting alongside other large theropods in the river valleys and plains of ancient Patagonia. The warm climate and abundant vegetation supported massive herbivores, which in turn supported large predators like Mapusaurus.
