About Spotted Seals:

Spotted Seals (also called Largha Seals) are medium-sized seals found in Arctic and sub-Arctic waters of the North Pacific Ocean. They're characterized by their light grey to silver coat covered with dark spots, giving them excellent camouflage on ice and in water. Adult spotted seals weigh 140-250 pounds and measure 4.5-5.5 feet long. These seals are excellent swimmers and divers, capable of diving over 1,000 feet deep and holding their breath for up to 30 minutes while hunting fish, squid, and crustaceans! Spotted seals use their sensitive whiskers (vibrissae) to detect prey in murky water and darkness. They're relatively shy marine mammals that are difficult for humans to approach. Spotted seals can be solitary but are gregarious and form large groups during molting seasons on ice floes. Spotted seal pups are born on sea ice with white, fluffy coats (lanugo) that they shed after a few weeks, revealing their spotted adult coat. Mother seals are devoted, nursing their pups for 3-4 weeks. Spotted seals are important to Arctic ecosystems and indigenous cultures. They face threats from climate change as sea ice diminishes, reducing breeding habitat. These charming seals are symbols of Arctic marine life!
