About Mountain Gorillas:

Mountain Gorillas are a subspecies of eastern gorilla found in the volcanic mountains of central Africa. They're among the most endangered great apes, with only about 1,000 individuals remaining in the wild. Mountain gorillas are the largest living primates, with adult males (called silverbacks) weighing up to 430 pounds and standing up to 6 feet tall! They're characterized by their thick, long black fur that helps them survive in cold mountain forests at elevations up to 13,000 feet. Despite their intimidating size and strength, mountain gorillas are gentle, peaceful herbivores that spend most of their day eating plants, leaves, and bamboo. They live in family groups led by a dominant silverback who protects the troop. Mountain gorillas are highly intelligent and share 98% of their DNA with humans! They use tools, show emotions, and can learn sign language. Baby gorillas are playful and curious, much like human children.
