A Giant from Ancient China
Daxiatitan binglingi lived approximately 100 million years ago during the Early Cretaceous Period in what is now Gansu Province, China. The name means "Daxia titan," referring to the ancient Daxia kingdom that once occupied the region where the fossils were discovered. Like most giant sauropods, Daxiatitan is known from partial skeletal remains—several vertebrae (including neck bones), a shoulder blade, and a femur—but these fragments are enough for paleontologists to estimate its impressive length at around 98 feet!
This herbivorous titanosaur used its long neck to reach vegetation other dinosaurs couldn't access, browsing the tops of tall trees like a prehistoric giraffe. The scattered bony armor plates embedded in its skin provided some protection against predators, though its massive size was likely its best defense. Daxiatitan represents the titanosaur family that would eventually become the dominant large herbivores of the Cretaceous.
