About American Bald Eagles:

The Bald Eagle is the national bird and symbol of the United States, representing freedom and strength! Despite the name, bald eagles aren't actually bald—their white head feathers make them appear bald from a distance. Adult bald eagles have distinctive white heads and tails with dark brown bodies and yellow beaks and talons. They're large birds of prey with wingspans reaching 6-8 feet and weighing 8-14 pounds. Bald eagles are powerful hunters with excellent eyesight (4-8 times better than humans!) and can spot fish from over a mile away. They primarily eat fish, swooping down to snatch them from the water with their powerful talons. Bald eagles mate for life and build enormous nests (the largest can weigh over 2 tons!) that they use year after year. The bald eagle was added to the endangered species list in 1967 due to hunting, habitat loss, and DDT pesticide poisoning. Thanks to protection and conservation efforts, their numbers have recovered dramatically—one of America's greatest conservation success stories! Bald eagles were removed from the endangered list in 2007. They can live around 20 years in the wild and up to 30 in captivity!
