About Hedgehogs:

Hedgehogs are small, spiny mammals found across Europe, Asia, and Africa, beloved for their distinctive appearance and beneficial role in gardens. They're covered with about 5,000-7,000 spines (modified hairs) that protect them from predators. When threatened, hedgehogs use muscles to draw their quilled skin over their full body, pulling in the parts not covered (head, feet, and belly) to form a tight, spiny ball! Hedgehogs are nocturnal insectivores that eat beetles, caterpillars, slugs, and snails—making them excellent natural pest controllers in gardens. They have poor eyesight but excellent senses of smell and hearing. Hedgehogs are solitary animals that can travel over a mile each night searching for food. In colder climates, they hibernate during winter, lowering their body temperature and heart rate dramatically. Baby hedgehogs (hoglets) are born with soft spines that harden within days. Hedgehogs are declining in many areas due to habitat loss, making wildlife-friendly gardens with hedgehog houses and access holes increasingly important. These charming creatures are symbols of garden biodiversity!
