About Skunks:
Skunks are small mammals native to North and South America, famous for their distinctive black and white coloring and powerful defensive spray! Striped skunks are the most common species, characterized by two white stripes running down their black backs. Skunks are about the size of house cats, weighing 6-14 pounds. Although they have excellent senses of smell and hearing, they have poor vision, being unable to see objects more than about 10 feet away. When threatened, skunks perform a warning display—stamping their feet, raising their tail, and doing a handstand! If the threat persists, they spray a foul-smelling musk from glands under their tail that can reach targets 10-15 feet away. The smell can linger for days! Skunks are nocturnal omnivores that eat insects, grubs, small rodents, fruits, and eggs—they're beneficial for controlling pest populations. They're generally docile animals that prefer to avoid confrontation. Skunks don't hibernate but may den together in winter for warmth. Baby skunks (kits) are born blind and don't develop their spray until about 3 weeks old. Skunks are important members of woodland ecosystems!
