About Zebra Foals:
Baby zebras are called foals and are born after an 11-13 month pregnancy. Zebra foals are born with their distinctive black and white stripes already visible, though they may appear brownish at first before darkening to black. Amazingly, foals can stand within 15 minutes of birth and can run within an hour—a crucial survival skill on the predator-filled African savanna! Newborn foals weigh about 55-70 pounds and stand about 2.5 feet tall. Mother zebras are very protective and will position themselves between their foal and any potential threat. For the first few days, the mother keeps other zebras away so the foal can learn to recognize her unique stripe pattern, scent, and call. Zebra foals are playful and curious, often seen running, jumping, and playing with other foals in the herd. They nurse for up to a year but start grazing on grass within their first week. Young zebras stay close to their mothers for protection and learning survival skills!
