Classic Texas Sheet Cake Recipe

Perfect for your 9x13 pan

For the Cake:

  • 2 cups (250g) all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups (400g) granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup (2 sticks/226g) unsalted butter
  • 1 cup (240ml) water
  • ¼ cup (25g) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 large eggs
  • ½ cup (120ml) buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the Frosting:

  • ½ cup (1 stick/113g) unsalted butter
  • ¼ cup (25g) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 6 tablespoons milk
  • 1 pound (450g) powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup (120g) chopped pecans (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Lightly grease your USA Pan 9x13 rectangular pan.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a saucepan, combine butter, water, and cocoa powder. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly.
  4. Pour hot chocolate mixture over flour mixture and stir until combined.
  5. Add eggs, buttermilk, and vanilla. Mix until smooth.
  6. Pour batter into prepared pan and bake for 20-25 minutes, until a toothpick comes out clean.
